Ashok Chakraborty, a sadhu at the Tibbati Baba Ashram in Palitpur, Bardhaman, received a call from fraudsters impersonating police officers. The scammers, who contacted him from an unfamiliar number based in Maharashtra, informed Chakraborty that several criminal cases were filed against him. They specifically mentioned seventeen cases registered at the Tilak Nagar police station in Maharashtra, and warned him that his phone would soon be deactivated. They claimed to be representatives of a phone company, offering to assist him in resolving the matter.
The fraudsters then requested a video call to discuss the situation. During the call, Chakraborty saw a person dressed in police attire who began questioning him about his income and lifestyle. The caller asked how he sustains himself, to which Chakraborty responded that he does not beg and survives solely on the donations given by those who visit the ashram. The fraudster continued asking questions about his personal life, trying to gather more information under the pretext of resolving the issue.
After several minutes of interrogation, the fraudster reassured Chakraborty that there was no need for concern and asked for blessings before ending the call. Despite the pressure and the threatening tone, Chakraborty remained calm, explaining that he had nothing to lose due to his simple life. The scammers were unable to extract any useful information or money, highlighting the tactics used by fraudsters who impersonate authorities and exploit fear to manipulate individuals.
